Nerve Regeneration

Nerve regeneration is the process by which damaged nerves in the body repair themselves. When a nerve is injured, the nerve fibers can grow back, but this process is often slow and can be incomplete. In the peripheral nervous system, which includes nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, regeneration is generally more effective compared to the central nervous system. Factors that influence nerve regeneration include the type and severity of the injury, the presence of supportive cells, and the overall health of the individual. Successful regeneration can restore function, but it may take months or years.
