Wallerian degeneration
Wallerian degeneration is a natural process that occurs when a nerve fiber is injured or cut. The part of the nerve attached to the spinal cord or brain remains, but the section distal to the injury (the part beyond the injury site) starts to break down and disintegrate. This process involves the clearing away of damaged nerve components, allowing the body to prepare for potential nerve regeneration. Essentially, Wallerian degeneration is the body's way of cleaning up after nerve injury, setting the stage for possible repair and recovery of nerve function.
