Neurotrophic Factors

Neurotrophic factors are specialized proteins that support the growth, survival, and maintenance of nerve cells, or neurons. They act like fertilizers for the nervous system, helping neurons develop properly, stay healthy, and form connections with each other. These factors are crucial during brain development and throughout life, aiding in repair after injury and maintaining cognitive functions. Examples include nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Without adequate neurotrophic support, neurons can deteriorate, which is linked to neurodegenerative diseases and mental health disorders.
