Myelin sheath
The myelin sheath is a protective covering that surrounds the axons of nerve cells (neurons). Think of it like insulation around electrical wires, helping electrical signals travel quickly and efficiently along the nerve. This insulation helps messages move smoothly from one part of your body to another, enabling things like movement, sensation, and thinking. The myelin sheath is made of fatty substances, which also protect the nerve fibers from damage. When the myelin sheath is damaged, it can cause problems with nerve communication, as seen in conditions like multiple sclerosis.
