Mitochondrial DNA Depletion Syndrome
Mitochondrial DNA Depletion Syndrome (MDDS) is a group of rare genetic disorders that affect the mitochondria, the energy-producing structures inside our cells. In MDDS, there is a significant loss of mitochondrial DNA, which impairs the mitochondria's ability to generate energy effectively. This can lead to a range of health issues, including muscle weakness, neurological problems, and organ dysfunction. Symptoms and severity can vary widely among individuals. MDDS can be inherited or arise spontaneously, and while there is no cure, management focuses on alleviating symptoms and supporting affected individuals’ health.
