MTDPS (Mitochondrial Depletion Syndrome)
Mitochondrial Depletion Syndrome (MTDPS) is a rare genetic condition where the number of mitochondria—the cell's energy producers—is abnormally low. This reduction impairs the cell's ability to generate energy efficiently, especially affecting organs with high energy needs like muscles, the brain, and the liver. Symptoms can include muscle weakness, developmental delays, liver problems, and neurological issues. MTDPS is caused by mutations in genes responsible for maintaining mitochondrial DNA and function. It is usually inherited and requires medical management focused on supporting affected organs, although there is no cure currently.
