Kearns-Sayre Syndrome
Kearns-Sayre Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that primarily affects the eyes and muscles, often leading to vision problems and muscle weakness. It typically appears before age 20 and is caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA, which impair energy production in cells. The condition can also cause other issues such as heart rhythm problems, neurological symptoms, and hearing loss. Since mitochondria are responsible for producing energy, their dysfunction in this syndrome impacts various organs, leading to a range of symptoms. Management focuses on monitoring and treating specific symptoms, as there is no cure for the underlying genetic mutation.
