Medieval music theory

Medieval music theory, emerging between the 9th and 15th centuries, laid the foundation for Western music. It introduced the concept of musical modes, which are types of scales with distinct emotional qualities. Notation evolved from simple neumes (symbols indicating pitch) to more complex systems that allowed for precise rhythm and melody. Theorists like Boethius and Guido of Arezzo contributed ideas on harmony and the relationship between music and mathematics. This period also saw the rise of polyphony, where multiple melodies are sung or played simultaneously, enriching the texture of music significantly.
