Lunar Basalts

Lunar basalts are types of volcanic rock found on the Moon's surface, formed by ancient volcanic activity. They are created when molten rock (magma) cools and solidifies, typically in the large, dark plains known as "maria." These rocks are rich in iron and magnesium but have low silica content, making them different from many Earth-based basalts. Lunar basalts provide valuable information about the Moon's geological history, including its formation and volcanic processes. Studying them helps scientists understand not only the Moon but also broader planetary processes in the solar system.
