Laskaris Dynasty
The Laskaris Dynasty was a ruling family of the Byzantine Empire during the 13th century, specifically after the Fourth Crusade (1204), when the empire was fragmented. The dynasty began with Theodore I Laskaris, who established a successor state in Nicaea, resisting Latin rule and aiming to restore the Byzantine Empire. The Laskaris emperors, notably John III and Theodore II, worked to strengthen their territory, culture, and military. Their efforts culminated in the eventual recapture of Constantinople in 1261, restoring the Byzantine Empire for a time until its decline. The dynasty represents a significant moment in Byzantine resilience and cultural revival.
