Nicaean Empire
The Nicaean Empire was a Byzantine state that existed from 1204 to 1261, following the Fourth Crusade, which led to the sacking of Constantinople. Its capital was Nicaea (modern-day İznik, Turkey). The empire was established by Byzantine leaders who fled Constantinople and aimed to restore the Byzantine Empire. It played a crucial role in preserving Byzantine culture and Orthodox Christianity during a time of turmoil. The Nicaean Empire eventually reconquered Constantinople in 1261, successfully restoring the Byzantine Empire, albeit in a weakened state, which continued to face challenges until its fall in 1453.
