Jammu and Kashmir statehood
Jammu and Kashmir, a region in northern India, lost its special status in August 2019 when the Indian government revoked Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted it autonomy. This change reorganized the area into two Union Territories: Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The region has since been seeking restoration of statehood, which would provide it more political autonomy and administrative power. Statehood means having its own government and legislative assembly, allowing local residents greater control over their governance and affairs, and reflecting their unique cultural and historical context.
