Jagir (land grants)

Jagir refers to a type of land grant historically used in India, particularly during the Mughal era. It was awarded by the ruler to nobles or military commanders as a form of compensation, allowing them to collect revenue from the land. In return, the jagirdar (the landholder) was expected to maintain law and order and provide military support. This system served both to reward loyalty and to ensure effective governance over territories. Jagirs played a significant role in the feudal structure of pre-colonial India, influencing land ownership and social hierarchies.
