Italian Front
The Italian Front during World War I was a major battlefield where Italy fought against Austria-Hungary from 1915 to 1918. Italy entered the war on the side of the Allies, aiming to gain territory. The front stretched mainly across the Alps and the Isonzo River. The fighting was characterized by difficult terrain and numerous battles, notably the twelve Isonzo battles. Heavy casualties ensued, but Italy ultimately secured significant victories, especially after the defeat of Austria-Hungary in 1918. The front significantly impacted Italy’s national identity and post-war politics, shaping its future in Europe.
