Infant respiratory distress syndrome
Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome (IRDS) is a condition that affects newborns, particularly those born prematurely. It occurs when their lungs are not fully developed, leading to difficulty breathing due to a lack of surfactant, a fluid that helps keep the air sacs in the lungs open. As a result, affected infants may struggle to get enough oxygen. Symptoms include rapid breathing, grunting, and skin that appears blue. Treatment often involves providing oxygen, breathing support, and sometimes medications to help mature the lungs. With prompt care, most infants recover well.
