Retinopathy of Prematurity

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a condition affecting premature babies, where abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This growth can lead to vision problems or even blindness if not monitored and treated. ROP occurs because the blood vessels in the retina are not fully developed in very early births. Regular eye exams in premature infants help detect ROP early, allowing for treatments like laser therapy or injections that can prevent severe vision loss. Awareness and timely intervention are crucial for preserving sight in these vulnerable babies.
