Hearing and balance
Hearing and balance are closely linked functions governed by the inner ear. Sound waves enter the ear, vibrating tiny structures called hair cells, which send signals to the brain to interpret sounds. The inner ear also contains the vestibular system, responsible for balance. It includes fluid-filled canals that detect head movements and straight-line accelerations. When the head moves, the fluid shifts, informing the body of its position and motion. This information helps maintain stability and coordinate movements, allowing us to walk, run, and interact safely with our surroundings while processing sounds and communication.
