Gunpowder Plot

The Gunpowder Plot was a failed conspiracy in 1605 by a group of English Catholics, including Guy Fawkes, to assassinate King James I and destroy the House of Lords. Frustrated by the king's persecution of Catholics, they aimed to blow up the Parliament during the State Opening, hoping to ignite a rebellion. However, the plot was foiled when authorities received an anonymous tip about the plan. On November 5, Fawkes was captured in the basement of Parliament, leading to the execution of the conspirators. The event is remembered annually in the UK on Guy Fawkes Night, marked by bonfires and fireworks.
