Detournement is a cultural strategy that involves taking existing artistic works, symbols, or media and recontextualizing them to convey a new message or meaning. Originating from the Situationist movement in the mid-20th century, it aims to subvert or challenge the original intent of the work, often as a form of political or social critique. By altering familiar imagery or narratives, detournement encourages viewers to see the original content in a different light and to question societal norms or ideologies, fostering critical thought and engagement.
