Chinese room argument
The Chinese Room Argument, proposed by philosopher John Searle, illustrates a challenge to the idea that computers can understand language or possess true intelligence. Imagine a person inside a room who doesn't speak Chinese but follows a set of rules to manipulate Chinese symbols based on input they receive. To an outside observer, it seems they understand Chinese, but they don’t actually comprehend the meaning. This suggests that even if a computer can process and respond to language, it may not truly understand it, highlighting a distinction between simulating understanding and genuine comprehension.
