Chinese Room

The Chinese Room is a thought experiment by philosopher John Searle that challenges the idea that a computer can truly understand language. Imagine a person inside a room who doesn’t speak Chinese but can follow a set of instructions to manipulate Chinese symbols, responding to questions in Chinese. Outside, it seems like they understand the language, but inside, they have no comprehension of what the symbols mean. This illustrates the difference between simulating understanding through rules and possessing genuine understanding or consciousness, raising questions about artificial intelligence and its capabilities.
