Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB)
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is a medical procedure used during certain heart surgeries. It temporarily takes over the functions of the heart and lungs, allowing surgeons to operate on a still, blood-free heart. A machine called a heart-lung machine pumps blood out of the body, oxygenates it, and returns it to the patient. This maintains blood circulation and oxygen supply to the body's organs while the heart is being repaired or replaced. CPB is essential for complex surgeries, ensuring the patient remains stable and safe during the procedure.
