Biofilm Theory

Biofilm Theory refers to the way certain microorganisms, like bacteria, group together to form a protective, slimy layer on surfaces, both natural and artificial. These microbes communicate and cooperate within this community, which enhances their survival against threats like antibiotics and the immune system. Biofilms are common in places like pipes, wounds, and even on our teeth (plaque). Understanding biofilms is important because they can lead to persistent infections and impact industries, from healthcare to water systems, requiring new strategies to manage or prevent their formation.
