Atropatene
Atropatene was an ancient kingdom located in what is now northwestern Iran, near the Caspian Sea. It emerged after the fall of the Achaemenid Empire around the 4th century BCE and played a significant role in regional politics. Its name is derived from Atropates, a Persian nobleman and the kingdom's first ruler. Atropatene was known for its strategic location along trade routes, contributing to its economic and cultural development. Over time, it became an important buffer state between rival empires, including the Romans and Parthians, until it gradually fell under Parthian influence.
