Anti-reflux surgery
Anti-reflux surgery, commonly known as fundoplication, is a procedure designed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and discomfort. During this surgery, the surgeon wraps the upper part of the stomach around the lower esophagus to create a new barrier that prevents acid reflux. This helps to alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life for those affected by chronic reflux. The surgery is usually considered when lifestyle changes and medications do not provide sufficient relief.
