Fundoplication
Fundoplication is a surgical procedure used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). During the surgery, the top part of the stomach (the fundus) is wrapped around the lower end of the esophagus to reinforce the valve that prevents stomach acid from flowing back. This helps reduce symptoms like heartburn and acid regurgitation. The most common type, Nissen fundoplication, creates a tight seal to prevent acid reflux while still allowing swallowing and burping. The procedure can be performed minimally invasively with small incisions, leading to quicker recovery and improved quality of life for patients with severe reflux symptoms.
