Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson was the 17th President of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869. He became president after Abraham Lincoln's assassination. A Southern Democrat, Johnson struggled with the Reconstruction era, facing challenges in rebuilding the nation after the Civil War. His policies, favoring leniency toward the South, led to conflicts with Congress, which sought stricter measures. Johnson was the first U.S. president to be impeached in 1868, mainly over disagreements about his attempts to remove the Secretary of War. He ultimately was acquitted by one vote and completed his term, but his presidency is often viewed as ineffective.
