War Democrat

A War Democrat was a member of the Democratic Party who supported the Union’s efforts during the American Civil War. While the party generally opposed President Lincoln’s Republican policies, War Democrats endorsed the war to preserve the United States and end slavery. They believed in maintaining the Union above political differences. These Democrats often collaborated with Republicans and were crucial in creating a political coalition that helped sustain the war effort.
