Alternative vote

The Alternative Vote (AV) is a voting system used to elect representatives in single-member districts. Voters rank candidates in order of preference instead of choosing just one. If no candidate receives an outright majority (more than 50% of first-choice votes), the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. Votes for this candidate are then redistributed to the remaining candidates based on voters' next preferences. This process continues until one candidate has a majority. AV aims to ensure that the elected representative has broader support among the electorate, reflecting more diverse preferences in the final outcome.
