1972 Moon missions
In 1972, NASA conducted the last Apollo Moon missions, specifically Apollo 16 and Apollo 17. Apollo 16, launched in April, focused on exploring the highlands of the Moon, allowing astronauts to study lunar geology. Apollo 17, launched in December, was the final manned Moon mission, featuring the first scientist-astronaut, geologist Harrison Schmitt. This mission included extensive lunar exploration, sample collection, and several scientific experiments. Together, these missions provided valuable insights about the Moon's composition and geological history, contributing significantly to our understanding of lunar science and space exploration.
