1971 Genocide
The 1971 Genocide refers to the systematic mass killings and atrocities committed during the Bangladesh Liberation War, where the Pakistani military and supporting militias targeted Bengali civilians. The conflict stemmed from long-standing political and cultural tensions between East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and West Pakistan (now Pakistan). Over several months, an estimated 300,000 to 3,000,000 people were killed, and millions were displaced. The genocide aimed to suppress the Bengali demand for independence, leading to widespread human rights violations, including mass rapes and the destruction of communities. This devastating event is a significant chapter in the history of South Asia.
