International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia
The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was an international court established in 1993 to prosecute serious crimes like genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia from 1991 to 2001. It aimed to deliver justice, promote accountability, and support reconciliation by holding individuals, including political and military leaders, responsible for their actions. The ICTY operated under international law and contributed significantly to the development of international criminal justice. It closed in 2017, with its functions transferred to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.
