Weight Stigma
Weight stigma refers to negative attitudes, beliefs, or discrimination directed at individuals because of their body weight or size. It can involve unfair judgments, social exclusion, or biases that assume someone’s worth, abilities, or health based solely on their weight. This stigma can affect mental health, self-esteem, and access to opportunities, often leading to feelings of shame or embarrassment. Importantly, weight stigma is a social issue rooted in stereotypes, not an accurate measure of a person’s character or health. Reducing weight stigma promotes respect, understanding, and support for all individuals regardless of size.
