Villa of the Papyri
The Villa of the Papyri is an ancient Roman villa located in Herculaneum, Italy, known for its remarkable collection of original Greek texts found on charred papyrus scrolls. Dating back to the 1st century AD, the villa was buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Excavations revealed a luxurious home filled with art and philosophical works, highlighting the intellectual life of the time. The scrolls, primarily works of Epicurean philosophy, have offered valuable insights into ancient thought and literature, although many remain fragile and difficult to fully read due to their damage from the volcanic eruption.
