Viking Social Structure
Viking social structure was hierarchical and divided mainly into three classes: the nobility (jarls), free farmers and warriors (karls), and thralls (slaves). Jarls held power and land, often leading raids and managing estates. Karls were independent landowners and skilled craftsmen, contributing to their communities and society. Thralls were employed for labor and had no personal freedom, often prisoners of war. This structure provided organization for Viking society, with a focus on loyalty, honor, and trade, supporting their expansive exploration and settlement throughout Europe and beyond.
