Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte

The Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, signed in 911, was an agreement between the Frankish King Charles the Simple and the Viking leader Rollo. It marked the end of Viking invasions in northern France by granting Rollo land, which later became Normandy, in exchange for his loyalty and the promise to protect the Frankish territory from other Viking attacks. This treaty is significant as it established one of the first independent duchies and facilitated the integration of Vikings into Frankish society, ultimately leading to the emergence of the Norman culture and the influential role of Normandy in European history.
