The Terror
"The Terror" refers to a period during the French Revolution from 1793 to 1794 when the revolutionary government, led by the Committee of Public Safety, used extreme measures to eliminate perceived enemies of the revolution. This included mass executions, most notably by guillotine. The aim was to maintain control and protect the revolution from threats, both internal and external. The period was marked by political violence, fear, and social upheaval, resulting in thousands of deaths. It ultimately led to a backlash against radicalism and contributed to the rise of more moderate leadership in France.
