Louis XVI's Fleeing Attempt

In June 1791, Louis XVI, the King of France, attempted to escape Paris with his family to avoid the growing unrest of the French Revolution. He hoped to reach loyalist forces in the countryside to regain control. Disguised as a commoner, they fled in a carriage but were recognized and apprehended in the town of Varennes. The escape attempt failed, leading to a significant loss of support for the king and increasing public distrust. This event marked a turning point in the revolution, ultimately leading to his trial and execution in 1793.
