The Self-Determination Theory

Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is a psychological framework that emphasizes the importance of human motivation and personality development. It posits that for individuals to thrive, they need to satisfy three basic psychological needs: autonomy (the desire to have control over one’s own actions), competence (the need to feel effective and skilled), and relatedness (the need for social connections and relationships). When these needs are met, people are more likely to be motivated, engaged, and satisfied in their activities, whether in education, work, or personal growth. SDT highlights the role of intrinsic motivation in fostering well-being and personal fulfillment.
