The Covenanters

The Covenanters were a group of Scottish Presbyterians in the 17th century who opposed the imposition of Anglican practices by the monarchy. They formed a covenant, or agreement, to defend their religious rights and maintain their form of worship. This led to a series of conflicts known as the Wars of the Covenant, especially against King Charles I's attempts to control the Scottish Church. The Covenanters played a significant role in the development of Presbyterianism in Scotland and shaped the relationship between religion and politics in the country. Their legacy continues to influence Scottish identity and religious practices today.
