The Covenanters

The Covenanters were a group of Scottish Presbyterians in the 17th century who opposed the imposition of Anglican practices by the monarchy. They formed a covenant, or agreement, to defend their religious rights and maintain their form of worship. This led to a series of conflicts known as the Wars of the Covenant, especially against King Charles I's attempts to control the Scottish Church. The Covenanters played a significant role in the development of Presbyterianism in Scotland and shaped the relationship between religion and politics in the country.
