The Chansons de Geste

The "Chansons de Geste" are a collection of epic poems from medieval France, typically composed in Old French. These narratives celebrate heroic deeds, historical events, and legendary figures, notably featuring themes of chivalry, loyalty, and conflict. The most famous example is "The Song of Roland," which recounts the heroic stand of Roland at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass. These works, composed between the 11th and 15th centuries, reflect the values and culture of feudal society, serving as both entertainment and a means to inspire and instill a sense of national identity.
