Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START)
The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) is a series of agreements between the United States and Russia aimed at reducing and limiting the number of nuclear weapons each country can possess. The first START treaty was signed in 1991, during the end of the Cold War, and it sought to decrease the threat of nuclear conflict. Subsequent treaties, including New START signed in 2010, continue these efforts. The goal is to promote strategic stability, enhance global security, and prevent nuclear arms races by ensuring both nations have a verified and manageable number of nuclear warheads and delivery systems.
