START I

START I, or the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty I, was a nuclear arms control agreement signed in 1991 between the United States and the Soviet Union. Its primary goal was to reduce the number of strategic nuclear weapons held by both countries, aiming to enhance international security and stability during the post-Cold War era. The treaty limited warheads and delivery systems like intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and bombers, reflecting a significant step toward reducing the nuclear threat. START I, which came into effect in 1994, was the first of several treaties aimed at nuclear disarmament and arms control.
