SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks)

SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) refers to two rounds of negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, aimed at curbing the arms race, particularly nuclear weapons. The first round (SALT I) began in 1969 and resulted in agreements to limit certain types of strategic ballistic missiles. The second round (SALT II) occurred in the late 1970s and sought to further reduce nuclear arsenals. Although SALT II was never ratified by the U.S. Senate, both accords reflected efforts to stabilize nuclear tensions and promote dialogue between the superpowers.
