SALT II

SALT II, or Strategic Arms Limitation Talks II, was a series of negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union in the late 1970s aimed at limiting nuclear arms. Building on earlier talks, the agreement sought to curb the production of nuclear weapons and impose restrictions on the numbers and types of missiles. Signed by President Jimmy Carter and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev in 1979, SALT II faced criticism and was never ratified by the U.S. Senate due to geopolitical tensions but marked an important step in arms control efforts during the Cold War.
