Strategic Arms Limitation Talks
The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) were negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War aimed at curbing the arms race, particularly nuclear weapons. Initiated in the late 1960s, these talks resulted in two main agreements: SALT I in 1972, which imposed limits on certain types of ballistic missiles, and SALT II in 1979, which sought to further restrict the number of strategic nuclear weapons. While SALT II was never fully ratified, these discussions marked a significant effort in diplomacy to reduce the threat of nuclear war and promote global security.
