SALT I

SALT I, or the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks I, was a series of negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union during the 1970s aimed at curbing the arms race, particularly involving nuclear weapons. The talks resulted in two key agreements: one limited the number of ballistic missile launchers each country could have, and the other created guidelines for future arms control. SALT I was significant as it marked the first formal step toward reducing nuclear tensions during the Cold War, establishing a framework for future arms control agreements.
