STM (short-term memory)

Short-term memory (STM) refers to the ability to temporarily hold and process information for a brief period, typically around 20 to 30 seconds. It allows us to remember a phone number long enough to write it down or keep track of points in a conversation. STM has a limited capacity, usually managing about 7 items at once, which can vary from person to person. This type of memory is essential for everyday tasks and learning, serving as a mental workspace for active thought and decision-making before information is either discarded or transferred to long-term memory for lasting storage.
