capacity of short-term memory
Short-term memory refers to the ability to hold a small amount of information temporarily, typically lasting around 15 to 30 seconds. Its capacity is generally limited to about 5 to 9 discrete pieces of information, often called "chunks," such as a phone number or a few words. This capacity allows us to work with information briefly but is easily overwhelmed if new data is introduced or if the information is not actively rehearsed. Essentially, short-term memory acts as a mental workspace, managing a small amount of information needed for immediate tasks.
