Shia-Sunni conflict
The Shia-Sunni conflict stems from a schism in Islam over leadership after the Prophet Muhammad's death in 632 AD. Sunnis believe that the community should select the leader (Caliph), leading to a more democratic approach, while Shias believe that leadership should stay within the Prophet's family, specifically favoring Ali, Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law. This division has led to different religious practices, beliefs, and political tensions throughout history, often exacerbated by geopolitical factors. The conflict is not only theological but also involves cultural, social, and political dimensions, contributing to ongoing strife in various parts of the world.
